What does the interview process for a software engineer look like?

  1. Resume Preparation

  2. Appliction

    Apply to a interested position. Usually, a candidate cna apply to multiple positions. A referral from your ex-colleague, friend or classmate can increase chances of hearing back.

  3. Quick Call with Recruiter

    Duration: 30 - 60 Minutes

    Quick phone call with a recruiter. Usually it takes 30 minutes, sometime more. You should expect to answer to question like "Why did you apply to this position and comapny?". The best way to prepare for this step is to go over company's web site, learn history, culture and product of the company.

    Additionaly, be ready to briefly intorduce yourself, your experience and what motivates you and your career goals.

  4. Technical Interviews

    Duration: 60-90 Minutes

    Count: 1 and more

    There are two types of technical interviews: algorithms and system design. The more senior is position, the more you get system design interviews, since it's expected that you solve algorithm problems.

  5. Behavioural Interviews

    Duration: 60-90 Minutes

    Count: 1 and more

    In this kind of interviews you usually asked questions about your experience, previous projects, how you solve problems at work.

  6. Onsite Interview (Optional)

    Duration: up to 10 hours

    If this is a hybrid or in-office position, it's expected you come in to the office, meet the team and do a kind of a hackathon project, or a series of smaller projects.
